Tech & Meet Howest: Cloud Security

Tuesday may 14th 2024

As an initiative of Howest, they allowed students to invite speakers over to the new campus to come talk about topics related to tech. Afterwards they scheduled some time to talk and broaden your network in the professional world.

On the 14th of may, the topic of the tech & meet was “cloud security”. I registered because it’s a topic we didn’t cover very deeply in our curriculum, but I just got to use some more cloud applications during my internship at Baloise. Therefore I wanted to get to know more about the cloud in itself and, considering I follow the “Cyber Security Professional” curriculum, especially about cloud security. The speakers of the day were Thomas Vandermarliere and Alexander Dekker (also a Howest alumnus) from Deloitte.

To start the presentation off, they talked about the general context of cloud. I learned that cloud is not an objective, but a way to enable business objectives. This is due to its flexible pricing (you pay for what you get), the self-service principle, its scalability, resource pooling and broad network access.

Then it was all about cloud security. We got told about the challenges that come with it, like the speed of change, knowledge gap and regulations. To finish off there were some examples of threat scenario’s that (could) happen. The most memorable to me was unauthorised public exposure, because it’s all very tedious to check if a cloud storage is publicly accessible.

As a way to keep the presentation interactive, they made a Menti quiz. The winner would get a Deloitte goodie bag. I did not get one, as I ended up in the 10th position.

Overall this was a very fun and educational event, I would recommend attending one next time it’s organised. Good to know too: you don’t have to be a student at Howest to attend.
